The common name for this genus are the "living rocks" but not to be confused with the Lithops of Africa. The blooms are often very beautiful, usually pink or sometimes white, but the plant is hard to distinguish from its rocky surroundings.
Occur in very arid dry areas and usually in limestone formations.
The most common variety of this is Ariocarpus fissuratus and its other variety, lloydii. This cactus is native only in Texas and south into Mexico. Other varieties are strictly native only to Mexico and seldom seen in the cactus trade, although they are well worth growing and having in collections. These varieties are: Ariocarpus retusus, Ariocarpus agavoides, Ariocarpus trigonus, Ariocarpus scapharostrus and Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus. |
