CACTI

Few people collect only one species of Cactus without later collecting more.. Cactophiles talk of having the Cactus-Bug because Cacti are very interesting and uniquely beautiful, striking plants to grow and exciting when they flower, and can fit in the most unlikely landscapes with incredible results. The flowers of all cacti range greatly in color from brilliant fuschias and magentas to bright or pale yellows, pastel pinks, white and light green and orange. There are many species which bloom at night and have very pungent fragrances with extremely large flowers. Some species have dark purple, red, pink or green markings in the florets and very interesting delicate and beautiful stamen and pistil arrangements. Flowers can range in size from only one quarter of an inch across to one foot across and as long. Many Cacti, under the proper conditions, will flower all summer. Many Cacti flowers have a fleshy base which develops into a fruit. The mature fruit ranges in color from green and yellow to black, red, orange, magenta and purple with various colored fleshes, often dark red or fluorescent magenta. The flesh is often juicy containing many small seeds. A FEW WORDS OF WISDOM. . . Give correct conditions and a cactus can live for decades , ... but ignore the 'golden rules' and your plant will be doomed and unlikely to fulfill its potential or be worthy of being a long-term friend'. Many cacti are sold as young plants for 'loose change'. AVOID these - they often need to grow huge before they flower and are unsuited to 'windowsill' locations. The easiest way to kill a cactus is with a cold, damp winter - these cacti seem to suffer most and are more demanding than the average cactus.! AVOID plants which have any 'white fuzz' in plant crevices- little beetles called mealy bugs can infest large areas and disfigure and eventually kill ... so choose from the 'bargain bin' carefully and if you see any signs of peat and disease DO NOT BUY ANYTHING - they will infect your own plants and disfigure them... badly! AVOID plants with fake colourful flowers or eyes 'glued' on or 'stuck' in - damage will show later on it will always be prone to disease. BE CAREFUL... Cacti are fun but some are very capable of growing fast and repelling with SPIKES- such as our TRICHOCEREUS CACTUS HEDGE.

ECHINOPSIS

A robust group of diverse plants with huge, colourfull blooms. Able to withstand dry frost and years of neglect. Echinopsis SubdenudataECHINOPSIS SUBDENUDATUM SPINELESS CACTUS
is almost spineless and quick growing, producing many large, white trumpet blooms over summer. The typical echinopsis is white, but many breeders such as schick have created wonderfully colourfull hybrids worth seeking from a specialist

ASTROPHYTUM

A genus of four species and many fascinating hybrids (kabutos, for example, from the Japanese and Thai breeders). From Mexico - Spineless Astrophytum Asterias, Astrophytum Capricorne with crazily twisted and contorted spines, Astrophytum Ornatum, and the spineless Astrophytum Myriostigma. Astrophytum Asterias and Astrophytum Myriostigma are, undoubtedly, Cacti from Outer Space.

LOPHOCEREUS

Lophocereus schottii mieckleyanus (MONSTROSUS)Lophocereus schottii TOTEM POLE CACTUS
In 1931 the American botanist and explorer Howard Gates was travelling down the Baja peninsula on unmade dirt roads and came across a colony of strange monstrose plants growing in a very soft sandy and gravelly soil. As this monstrose form of Lophocereus schottii does not apparently flower or seed, all specimens also in cultivation must have at one time been propagated vegatively, unless a species plant now and again yielded a fasciated seedling. The stems are slim, lightly pruinose with broad rounded protuberances roughly branched and poorly defined. The areoles are few and insignificant and flowers and seeds virtually unknown. Stems are ascending and branching, occasionally at higher levels reverting to normal species growths. However I have not observed the cluster of hard grey needle like down pointing spines that occur on species plants at stem ends. In habitat and cultivated specimens, the stems mark quite badly in age due to blowing sand, weathering and old age. Usually, only a few inches of growing stems remain in pristine condition. As we do not live in a perfect world this form is not recommended for growing on as a show plant. The habitat of this plant is a fairly small area NE of El Arco, about halfway down the Baja peninsula. Plants there are heavily weathered and badly marked with just the newest growing tips being in good condition. The plants are in quantity and grow together in small thickets allowing one to walk amongst them freely, but with each step sinking a little into the soft sandy soil. Fortunately this plant cultivates well but grows on rather slowly. It also branches, just from the base, which the species does not. The monstrose plants enjoy a warm sunny environment and for more speedy growth a light position on a higher shelf with light feeding and rainwater given to the bottom of the plant will ensure success, especially with rooted detached branches, which do well in these conditions. A 7cm long tip or branch is most suitable for propagation. Allow to dry off and root in spring in gentle heat and being very careful with the watering for a start, using a gritty compost. Often plants can be seen with a root or two projecting from a lower stem.
