What is a sedum roof? - A sedum roof is a living carpet. Sedums are low-growing succulent plants with thick fleshy leaves and stems - particularly suitable for growing in the inhospitable conditions found on a roof. Native sedums, such as Sedum album, can be seen growing in very hostile conditions such as on dry stone walls, cliffs and old buildings.
Plants on a sedum roof must withstand periods of low rainfall, strong drying winds, heat and sun...all in the minimum of growing medium.
They have shallow roots and absorb morning dew to rehydrate during extended drought.
Where to grow sedum roofs?
A sedum roof can be used almost wherever the structure is strong enough to take the final, saturated weight (don't forget the sedums alone will weigh A LOT when mature). They can be found on sheds, chicken houses and kennels as well as on larger structures. The pitch of the roof can be up to 30 degrees, and curves are easily accommodated.
A 'living' roof benefits those inhabiting the building, and the wider environment.
What are the benefits of a sedum roof?
Reduction in storm-water run off- it can absorb 70 - 100% rainfall.
Reduced heat loss from the building in winter
Reduction of internal building temperature during summer
Reduction in energy costs
Attractive to look at and beneficial for wildlife
Improved acoustic performance of the building
Plants remove carbon dioxide and absorb pollutants from the air
Evaporation from the vegetation cools the air above the roof
Protects roof from UV light, so increasing life span |
The plants used are sedums . They may be planted individually as 'plug' plants, or can be applied in the form of a DRYSCAPES roll...rolled out like a carpet.
Does it need feeding or watering?
Maintenance requirements are minimal. Once established there is no need for extra water.DRYSCAPES recommends a light top-dressing of compost each summer over the plants. This enables surface rooting and guarantees the plants grow well in future years. In the third and subsequent years DRYSCAPES recommends adding 'fish, blood and bone' -use a nature-based garden feed to enhance plant flowers, plant health and leaf colours
